A Journey of Determination.

On the eve of Strade Bianche, Kwiatkowski reflects on the path that led him to cycling greatness

Published: March 7, 2025

For years, Michal Kwiatkowski’s name has echoed through the cycling world. His career, defined by remarkable triumphs and intense rivalries, was never a straightforward ride. Every challenge, every setback, and every moment of doubt only strengthened his resolve. His journey isn’t just about victories—it’s a testament to passion, perseverance, and the relentless pursuit of greatness.

The rivalry that fuelled his success.

Looking back, one of the defining themes in Kwiatkowski’s career has always been rivalry.

“In 2014, I battled Sagan on the Santa Caterina climb and won,” he recalls. “At that time, there was some rivalry between me and Peter. He pushed me. Racing against him always gave me that extra kick of motivation.”
Competing against riders like Peter Sagan forced him to elevate his game. The dynamic between them mirrored the rivalries we see today—Pogačar vs. Vingegaard, Van der Poel vs. Van Aert. These battles are not just about competition; they drive athletes to their limits.
“If there isn’t someone pushing you to train harder because you want to be stronger, faster, and better than them, you won’t become a professional rider.”
For Kwiatkowski, it was never just about beating his rivals—it was about proving to himself that he could overcome every obstacle. But the road was far from easy.
"I remember when I was in Caja Rural, without a real race programme,” he says. “I saw how Sagan was winning so easily and it pushed me, since I was the one who used to compete with him on equal terms."
That frustration could have turned into bitterness, but instead, it ignited a fire. It drove him forward, pushing him to new heights.

The Defining Moment: A World Champion is Born

When Michal Kwiatkowski won the World Championship, it was a defining milestone in his career. “That win made me recognisable, and I still wear it on my sleeve,” he says. But it was more than personal glory. In Poland, cycling had long been overshadowed by other sports.”
His victory changed that. He put Polish cycling on the map.
Winning the World Championship cemented his place in cycling history, earning him the respect of both his peers and fans around the world.

Milan-San Remo: The Rollercoaster on the Riviera

Among the many races that define his career, Milan-San Remo stands out. Known for its unpredictability and dramatic finishes, it provided Michal Kwiatkowski with one of his most euphoric moments. “I was actually pretty sure I had lost it. I was hoping for the result and stressing while everyone was trying to keep me calm. When the result was confirmed and I was the winner, the euphoria started,” he shares, recalling the overwhelming joy of crossing the finish line.
However, the road to Sanremo was anything but smooth. He had endured heartbreak and brutal conditions in previous years, including one edition where heavy snow forced a cancellation, leaving him and his teammates devastated. The frustration of that moment still lingers in his memory.
The following edition was just as chaotic, with relentless rain and temperatures hovering around zero degrees. It was so cold that he was forced to stop at the second feed zone “In the next edition, I crashed on the Poggio descent, whereas in 2016, it was fine,” he recalls. “I was alone at the top of the Poggio, with Sagan chasing me,” he recalls. “His teammates were focused on ensuring he would win the sprint at the top, but it didn’t happen—because I won it.”
That experience became a valuable lesson, sharpening his tactical awareness for the following year. “Knowing that Sagan’s strategy would surely be to attack after it didn’t work for him before, I was ready. And that’s exactly what he did. It felt great to cross the line, knowing all the pressure was on him.”

Life beyond the bike.

Though Kwiatkowski’s career has been marked by fierce competition and exhilarating victories, he remains deeply grounded in the importance of family and balance.
“I have two children now and I know that I wouldn't be where I am without them, my wife, my family and close friends.”
Their support is his foundation. When he won in Jaén, he spent time reflecting on how much their unwavering belief in him is what keeps him going.
“I appreciate and understand more and more that I am who I am thanks to them,” he confides.
As a father and husband, he has learned to balance his commitment to cycling with the demands of family life. learned to balance his dedication to cycling with the demands of family life. While the sport continues to drive him, it’s the love and support of those closest to him that give him the true strength to keep going.

The Road Ahead: The Fire Still Burns.

For Kwiatkowski, the journey is far from over. With age comes new challenges—both physical and mental. But his hunger has never faded “There are still a lot of things left to achieve. For example, I didn’t expect to win in Jaén, but here I am with victory in my pocket.” The fire within him hasn’t dimmed—in fact, it burns brighter than ever, propelling him towards new challenges with unstoppable determination.

Giving Back: A Legacy Beyond Racing.

One of Michal Kwiatkowski’s proudest achievements is the cycling academy he founded “I am very proud of the fact that this project is still going, even though no champions have been crowned yet,” he says.
This is a place where young, talented riders are given the opportunity to develop their skills and reach their potential. Michal's commitment to giving back to the sport that gave him so much is evident in his dedication to these young athletes.
“We’re still supporting the kids in the sports school as much as we can, even though it’s not easy.”
The academy is about more than just nurturing talent, it is a way for him to inspire and shape the next generation of riders, just as he was once inspired by the greats before him. And even though no champions have emerged just yet, he remains optimistic.
“I think it’s going to happen soon because we have some talented riders now in the junior category who will probably sign a professional contract with a team soon,” he says.

The journey continues.

Michal Kwiatkowski’s story is one of resilience, rivalry, and personal growth. His victories on the world stage are not just a testament to his talent but to the relentless determination that has shaped his career. With every win, every battle with his rivals, and every setback, Kwiatkowski has proven that greatness is earned, never given. As he continues his journey, both on and off the bike, his motivation remains clear: to keep pushing, keep improving, and prove to himself that he still has more to give.
For him, the future may be uncertain, but one thing is certain—his journey in cycling is far from over.

“If you don’t improve and look forward, you just go backwards"
