Two World Titles In, Lara Gillespie Wants More
Published: November 4, 2026
From Consistency to Excellence
Irish track cyclist Lara Gillespie has already reached the top of the sport twice. In 2025, she claimed the UCI Track World Championship title in the Elimination Race in Santiago. In 2026, she returned to the top step of the podium, winning the Points Race at the World Championships in Shanghai.
Two world titles, two different disciplines, and a season shaped by confidence, courage, and continuous improvement. Yet, for Lara, the next challenge is already clear: to keep learning, become more daring, and turn consistency into excellence.

Learning to be bold
What did this season teach you about yourself?
Reflecting on the 2026 season, I learned that I can be brave and bold. I learned that I can be consistent even when I’m having a bad day. I can, and I will, show up.
In my first race of the season, the UAE Tour, I was braver and more gutsy in the bunch sprints. I took something away from every race and started to enjoy the technique of bunch sprinting, which I had never really liked before.

Two disciplines, one learning process
What do road and track racing teach you about each other?
I love racing in two disciplines. I think it keeps my mind and body fresh and focused. They complement each other incredibly well, especially for my role on the road.
Tactics are something I’m always learning, and it’s been fun developing my ability to read races better. Racing in different ways also teaches me more about my physical capabilities. It helps me push my limits and keep finding new areas to improve.
Every second counts
What makes the difference when you need to make a decisive move on the track?
I have to be 100% focused on both the road and the track, but on the track, every second counts. My observations have to be fast and precise. It’s all about momentum: when I make a move, it has to be decisive.
A lot comes down to instinct. However, the greater my physical capacity, the more energy I have available to read the race.

Stiff enough, light enough
How important is the connection between your feet, shoes, and pedals when you’re racing?
Every bit of energy I put out through my legs is transferred through my feet and into my shoes. The stiffer they are, the better that energy is transferred.
The comfort of my Nimbl shoes is also very important. I love how lightweight my Ultimate Exceed Pro Edition shoes are, both on the road and on the track. They’re extremely comfortable for long races and training sessions while still being stiff enough to deliver high power. I’m very conscious of my feet, so wearing comfortable shoes is a big priority for me.

The pursuit continues
What’s the next thing you want to improve?
I’m still working on being braver and bolder and continuing to learn the craft of the sport. I’ve shown myself that I can be consistent, but I want to be excellent.
